Why I Run for a Safe Haven

Oct 06, 2025

Every October, runners lace up their shoes for something bigger than personal bests or finish line photos. The Run for a Safe Haven isn't just another 5K—it's a powerful statement that our community stands united against domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

This year marks the 22nd annual Run for a Safe Haven on October 25, 2025, and registration is officially open. But beyond the date on the calendar, this event represents 22 years of community members saying "enough is enough" and putting their feet to the pavement to create real change.

Every Step Matters

When you register for the Run for a Safe Haven, you're not just signing up for a race. You're joining a movement that has been building momentum for more than two decades. Your registration fee directly supports critical services for survivors—emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, and prevention education programs that reach into our schools and workplaces.

Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in their lifetimes. Sexual assault impacts people of all ages and backgrounds. Human trafficking operates in the shadows of every community, including ours. These aren't just statistics—they're our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family members who need a safe haven when their world becomes dangerous.

A Community United

What makes this event special is seeing families, first-time runners, seasoned athletes, and survivors themselves all crossing the same finish line. Some run to honor a loved one. Others run because they've personally walked the difficult path from victim to survivor. Many run simply because they believe everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home.

The atmosphere on race day is electric with hope. You'll see matching team shirts, children in strollers, and people of all fitness levels coming together. Because this run isn't about speed—it's about solidarity.

Be Part of the Solution

Registration is open now, and we need you. Whether you're a serious runner aiming for a PR or someone who plans to walk the entire route, your presence matters. Can't make it on October 25th? Consider registering anyway or making a donation in honor of someone who has inspired you.

Together, we can create a region where everyone has access to a safe haven. Together, we can eliminate domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. It starts with a single step.
